Substance Use Therapy

See below for common questions and concerns to be addressed in substance use counseling.

Do I need substance use therapy?

This is a common question and one only you can answer for yourself. A few things to ponder:

- Do you ever find yourself wondering "do I drink (use/smoke/etc) too much?"

- Do you ever miss work or personal obligations because you're too hungover?

- Do you ever miss work or personal obligations in order to obtain your substance of choice?

- Are you personal relationships suffering because of your substance use?

- Have any family or friends suggested they're worried about your use?

- Have you ever thought of yourself as "sober curious"?

If any of these apply to you, substance use counseling may be right for you. Getting and staying clean and sober require determination, grit, a lot of hard work! Only you can do it, but you don't have to do it alone.

What type of addictions do you work with?

The tricky thing about addictions is that there can be much overlap in what type of addiction. Perhaps we begin struggling with an addiction to alcohol and then we find ourselves struggling with gambling. SKO Counseling works with all types of addictions, however, majority of our experience is in drugs, alcohol, and sex.

Do you have to disclose my addiction?

My top two priorities as your counselor are and will always be safety and trust in our therapeutic relationship. I will always do my best to maintain positive rapport with you and confidentiality, however, if safety is threatened, I may have to break confidentiality. Please feel free to contact our office for clarification on this question.

Please also note that if you intend to use your insurance and we are treating a substance use-type disorder, that will be disclosed to your insurance company per insurance requirements. You have the right to decline usage of insurance if you'd like to avoid this disclosure.

I'm not sure I want to be sober.

That's perfectly okay! SKO Counseling is a great place to explore your identity as a sober or sober curious person. Anybody at any stage of recovery and sobriety is welcome into SKO Counseling.

What does substance use counseling look like?

Substance use counseling can look very different for each person. Together, we will identify your personal goals as they directly relate to your substance use. I have worked in the substance use field for almost a decade and feel very comfortable navigating difficult questions and topics that commonly arise in this type of counseling. I will offer your accountability and feedback. I will be honest with you if I notice any concerns. I will never judge you for relapsing or struggling to come to terms with your new ideas of sobriety.

I do recommend that any individual attempting to get sober does so in a community. This can look different for each person and together and we can discuss your options.
