Private Pay

Did you know there are many benefits to paying for services without insurance? Below is a non-exhaustive list of common reasons why paying with insurance may be working against you.

01

Privacy

Insurance companies can, at any time, ask for clarifying information into your treatment. If you choose to use your insurance, SKO Counseling may be obligated to submit clinical diagnoses and notes to justify ongoing care. This means your information is not truly 100% private. SKO Counseling values your privacy and would encourage you to make the decision that is best for you in all aspects of your treatment.

02

Diagnosis

In order to utilize insurance, your provider is obligated to submit a clinical diagnosis (or diagnoses) to your insurance company. This then becomes part of your medical record. If you have a diagnosis that you do not want shared, you may want to consider paying out of pocket for services.

03

Ongoing Treatment

Insurance companies can, at any time, limit the number of therapy sessions they will reimburse. If you choose to use insurance, please note that as your provider I cannot guarantee your sessions will be covered and the number and frequency is ultimately set by your insurance company. When you choose private pay, you and your provider are in charge of the frequency and total number of sessions.

04

Flexible session lengths

Insurance companies also dictate the amount of time one can spend in a session. If you've ever left a session feeling like you needed an extra 20 or 30 minutes, please note that your session length is dictated by insurance. If you choose to pay out of pocket you may be able to request longer or shorter session lengths. Contact your provider to discuss options.

We understand resources are limited, especially in the current economy. We believe both that therapy should be accessible and that therapy is an investment in yourself. Therapy is a commitment that neither you nor your provider should take lightly. Our fees adequately reflect our education, trainings, skill level, and years of experience. If you cannot afford these rates, we are happy to support you in locating a provider who meets your financial needs.
